And They Lived Happily Ever After...
When Rival came to me it seemed to be fate dealing her cards. I had just placed a foster dog I called Pecos, when I went to an agility trial and saw a dog in Zia Rescue named by his foster mom: Pecos. He had the biggest prick ears I had ever seen! I knew at once he would find a home with me. Julie convinced me to just try him for a week, but as soon as our eyes met, he had found his ‘forever home’. I changed his name to Rival and started training immediately. A year later and he was in his first agility trial. He now has his first titles as well in AKC, USDAA, and ASCA agility. He is a joy to be with and every day with him is special. He is my bat-dog, my snuggle-bug, my bunny chaser, lizard hunter and the fastest little Aussie in the Southwest! Thank you to Julie and everyone who helped little Pecos become my Rival! |

Jessie has been adopted and lives in Anton, TX in the TX panhandle. She will live with another Aussie male, Remington. The new owners found Jessie on PetFinder. They owned a deaf dog in the past and wanted to adopt a dog that would be harder to place. Jessie is doing well in her forever home. Her owner, Heather, says “she is so much fun, I just love her to death”. Heather says that Jessie is so funny with toys and is having fun running around playing. At first, Jessie didn’t want to leave the house. Heather had to go and get her by the collar to take her out to go potty. But, now she wants to be with Heather and willingly goes outside with her. Jessie and her new Aussie roommate, Remington, are also getting along well. Remington has learned to take care off Jessie. Heather can tell him to go get her if she is sleeping and he will go and touch her with his nose to get her attention. Jessie also gets along well with Heather’s dad’s dog, Juno. Juno is also deaf.

Has been adopted! Earl was adopted by his foster mom, Kathy. . It's a case of the foster home ending up being the forever home! Kathy does German Shepherd Rescue for Central NM GSD Club. So, Earl adds a bit of color to her pack of 4 almost-black German Shepherds.

TJ has gone to a home where gets to do agility with her new owner! TJ completed a couple of agility classes in 2009 and seems to be a natural at the sport. Her new owner thinks she'll be ready for the show ring in 2010! This is great progress for a dog who spent a good deal of her younger months tied out. TJ is now a very social girl and has calmed down quite a bit with the large increase in exercise and mental stimulation. |

Opal, a black and white 1.5 year old female, was adopted this summer! She moved to her new house in the country, near Pojoaque, NM. With 2 acres of grass and trees, she spends her day playing with Ally, a 9 year old female Aussie. Ally is quite accepting of her role as yard-trainer for Opal. Running around the yard full speed ahead with her favorite squeak toy is one of Opal’s favorite activities. Together Opal and Ally enjoy walks to the nearby riverbed, with time to explore and splash in the water. Frequently, they travel to Albuquerque and enjoy walks in the parks. Opal likes everyone and makes friends easily with other dogs. She feels quite secure in her new home. Opal's family sends their appreciation out to Julie and Kathy for fostering Opal and preparing her for her new home. |

Sassy is now living in AZ with 2 other Aussies. She plays a lot with her younger brother, Jasper. She loves playing with various balls - tennis balls, basketballs, other toys... Sassy is a natural trail dog! She has gone mountain biking with her new family and one day, encountered two elk. While Sassy thought about running after the elk, she stayed with the family. Sassy loves all the exercise, care, and attention she gets in her new home! We're so happy for Sassy! |

Jasmine was taken into the Zia rescue program from Valencia Valley Shelter just before her euthanasia date. Jasmine was a stray that wandered into someone's backyard and was attacked by the dog that lived there. She needed a little hair shaving to air the wounds and antibiotics to prevent infection but was otherwise not seriously injured. Jasmine is a mini-Aussie, measuring 16". She is middle-aged (~5 years) and is a very sweet, loving dog. She appears to do well with other more sedate dogs - rather than exhuberant dogs - and likes males better than females. We would prefer she go to an adult home since she is under-confident. Jasmine's ideal person would work to build up her confidence in all situations. She's what you would call "a little tender soul".

Kassie is an Australian Shepherd cross but clearly has a lot of Aussie in her! She was left at the Valencia Valley Animal Shelter by her owner and was rescued just before her euthanasia date. Kassie has a wonderful personality! She gets along very well with all people and dogs. After she recovered from a pretty bad case of kennel cough, Kassie went to live near Alamogordo, NM where, according to her new owners, she is a great addition to their family! One of Kassie's main jobs is "holding down the couch". What a great life! |
